Distinction is Brintons' deep plush Wilton, and it is patterned rather than plain — every design carries a repeat and a self match, but the pattern is made by pile direction rather than by colour. Six tonal designs in eight colourways, 100% New Zealand wool at 1988 g/m², rated Heavy Domestic. Brintons was founded in Kidderminster in 1783.

What it’s like to live with
It shows footprints and shading
A deep, soft pile shows footprints, vacuum lines and patches of light and dark where the wool has been walked one way and then another. That is not wear and not a fault — it is what a plush pile does. The design is made of light rather than colour, so it shifts as you cross the room. Some would rather a pattern stayed put.
Where it works
Heavy Domestic rather than Extra Heavy, which puts it in sitting rooms, main bedrooms and dining rooms — places where a carpet is enjoyed rather than marched over. A busy family hallway is not really its job, and we would point you at something harder-wearing for that.
Setting out, and the stairs
The repeat across is a metre, dividing four times across a 4.00m roll. Down the roll it varies — 0.65m on Gazelle Pepper against 0.98m on Titus Platinum — and a long repeat means more carpet to bring it round on a flight. Every piece on a flight must run with the pile the same way; set one tread against the run and it reads as a different shade.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

A plush tonal design is all but impossible to judge from a photograph: the pattern is made of light and a screen flattens it into one grey. Walk round a piece on our Lostock Hall displays rather than stand in front of it, the only way to see what it does. We will book a sample out, or bring them to you and measure up.

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
