Renaissance Classics is the Persian and oriental end of the Brintons range, and at 1699 g/m2 it is the heaviest Axminster Brintons make. Nine designs — Leila, Khali, Bazaar, Tibetan, Persian in two colourings, Majnu, and Medici in blue and ruby — worked in the scrolling, close-detailed manner an axminster loom exists for, each tuft inserted separately from a fixed palette of yarns.

What it’s like to live with
Where it works
Halls, stairs and landings first, then dining and formal sitting rooms. A dense multi-colour oriental pattern hides tracking and marking in a way no plain will, which is why it has survived on staircases for a century and a half. It wants plain or near-plain walls around it.
Self or half-drop, and centring
Match varies by design. Self means the pattern meets level across the width; half-drop means the next piece moves half a repeat down the roll first — 500mm given up wherever two pieces meet. Leila Rose and Khali Fire are self, Tibetan Gold and Medici Blue half-drop. These designs have an obvious centre, so two rooms of equal area can want different amounts once the pattern is centred.
Worth knowing
Renaissance Classics and Renaissance share a name and no designs at all — Palmette, Kashan, Versailles and Javanese belong to the other one, so name the design rather than the range if you have seen something you liked. Underlay wants to be firm rather than soft under a woven back, and stubborn marks are better left to a professional clean.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

An oriental design has to be judged whole, and a small piece shows you a corner of a motif rather than the design. Colour is the other difficulty: reds, golds and blues this deep behave differently under a north-facing window than under a lamp. See it at proper size on the displays at Lostock Hall, then we will book a sample out.
