The Country Life Collection is the cut-and-loop range, and the construction is the whole point: some tufts are cut open and left standing, others left as closed loops, and the pattern comes from the difference between the two rather than from colour. Eight designs in two colours, Cloud and Bamboo, both undyed — the colour is the fleece's own. Brintons was founded in Kidderminster in 1783.

What it’s like to live with
The pattern moves with the light
Cut pile and looped pile reflect light in opposite ways — cut tufts absorb it and look darker, loops bounce it back and look lighter — so the design appears and disappears depending on where you stand. A Canopy or a Roots looks nearly flat in even north light and much more pronounced where sun rakes across it.
The repeats vary enormously
Dapple repeats every 17mm down and 19mm across — effectively an all-over texture, barely harder to set out than a plain. Plato sits around a quarter of a metre. Verdure Loop is the other extreme at 0.538m down and 0.5m across, a proper repeat to plan on paper so a staircase climbs in step. Tog runs 1.79 to 2.3, so name the design when you ask.
Where it works, and what to watch
Heavy Domestic suits bedrooms, sitting rooms and a landing, and undyed wool at 1628 g/m² is naturally resilient. One width only, 4.00m, so a wide room takes a seam. Loops can be pulled by a cat's claws or a dog that scrabbles, and a pulled loop shows more than a snag in a cut pile — keep a beater bar off it, or set high.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.
