Woven Wilton · 27 heather colours · five widths from 1.00m to 4.57m

Bell Twist Heather is the same carpet as plain Bell Twist — same weave, same weight, same wear rating — spun from a different yarn. Several shades are blended before weaving, so the pile is a fine mix of colours rather than one flat shade. That depth is what disguises footmarks and tracking, which is why it suits a busy house.

Not pictured: Wisteria — this colourway is in the range and on display in the showroom, but we do not yet have a photograph of the pile good enough to put next to the rest.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with

Where it works

The places a plain is most exposed: a doorway threshold, the nose of a stair tread, the strip of landing everybody walks. A flecked yarn scatters light instead of reflecting it evenly, so the pale shine where feet have crushed the pile never resolves into a clean stripe. It ages evenly to the eye, which is why we point families with children and dogs this way.

Laying a heather

The rules for a plain still apply. Pile direction decides how a piece reads — turn one round and its tone changes — and a seam is planned before anything is cut. What the fleck does is break the line of a join, so it is more forgiving to lay. At 1420 g/m2 the pile wants firm underlay rather than deep.

Colours, and when a plain is better

Chalk, Barley and French Champagne stay light without going chalky in a room lit from one side. Iron Anvil, Storm, Coffee and Welsh Mountain hold their depth where a room stays dark. If you want one clean, definite colour, choose plain Bell Twist instead — a heather makes small marks far less obvious but does not make them disappear.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

Heathers are what people most often misjudge from a small piece: cut a swatch small enough and the fleck averages into one muddy colour, which is not what it does across a room. See them at size on our Lostock Hall displays, with the plain in the same shade alongside. We will book a sample out to take home, or bring them to you.

See Bell Twist Heather in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
