Natura

Woven Axminster · 24 design-colourways across 7 design families

Natura is Ulster's contemporary large-scale Axminster, woven in Portadown in an 80% wool, 20% nylon blend. Twenty-four design-colourways across seven families draw on bark, water, stone and grasses — large and simplified rather than traditional motifs, and meant for big family rooms. Two things decide the job before the design does: a single 4m width, and a 200cm repeat.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with

4m only, so the room decides the seam

Natura is woven in 4m only. A room up to 4m in its shorter dimension takes one piece. Go past it and there is a seam, so it goes where it will not be looked at. The repeat is 200cm across by 100.3cm down, straight match, so the second length is pulled down the roll until it comes back into line.

A slice of the design per stair tread

A 200cm-wide motif cannot show itself on a stair tread. You get a slice of the design per step, and the stairs read as texture and colour rather than pattern. Many people take Natura through the main rooms and put a plain or a small-repeat pattern on the stairs. There are no runner widths in the range.

Where it works

Big family rooms are what the large designs are drawn for — lounges, open-plan spaces, a generous dining room. Rated extra heavy wear and moth proofed, tog 1.8. At 80% wool the pile lifts back from furniture rather than staying crushed, and the broken, mottled designs — Storm, Char, Rift — hide everyday marking better than the cleaner ones.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

A large-scale design is the hardest kind to judge from a sample: you see a fraction of a two-metre repeat and nothing of how it lands in a room. The Lostock Hall displays put the scale in front of you. We will book a sample out for your own light, or bring it to the room, measure up and tell you where any seam falls.

See Natura in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
