Glenmoy

Glenmoy is really two collections under one name: traditional florals and orientals on one side, tartans and checks on the other, seventeen designs in all. Everything is woven in an 80% wool, 20% nylon blend at Ulster's Portadown mill and rated for extra heavy wear. It suits someone who knows whether their house wants a floral or a check.

What it’s like to live with

Where it works

Whichever half you choose, this is a hall, stair and landing carpet: the pattern disguises tracking as no plain manages, and at 80% wool the pile springs back from furniture and footfall. A large floral wants a big lounge floor; a tartan or island check sits in a smaller room without taking it over.

Two halves, two repeats

Madame Pompadour repeats at 97cm on a half drop, and the other florals sit in that territory: matching across a seam means offcuts, and where a whole motif lands is decided before anything is cut. The clan tartans and island checks are smaller and more regular, so there is less to line up and less left over.

Square to what?

A floral hides a fitting error; a straight line does not — a tartan wandering a centimetre over four metres is visible from the front door. On a landing with an out-of-square wall, common in older Lancashire terraces, a check cannot be square to everything at once, so you choose: the room, the stairs, or the line you see first. Decided before cutting.

See it

Florals and tartans are on display at Lostock Hall, and it is worth seeing them side by side, because most people arrive certain which they want and leave having changed their mind.
