This is Brintons woven with the Glasgow design studio Timorous Beasties, and it is not a conventional patterned carpet. Thirteen designs across damasks, moirés, butterflies and botanicals, large in scale, finely drawn and directional. Silt Moiré repeats at 2.92 metres down the roll, which is closer to a wallpaper laid flat than to a carpet pattern. The firm dates back to 1783, when it was founded in Kidderminster.

What it’s like to live with
Which rooms
A large sitting room, a dining room, a wide landing, a long hall — anywhere the eye takes in enough floor for the design to make sense. A small box room shows only a fragment, and a fragment reads as random; a shorter-repeat design is the honest answer there.
Where the design lands
Silt Moiré repeats at 2.92m down and 2.00m across — in a room 3.5 by 4 metres, roughly one full statement and part of a second. It is positioned deliberately, on paper, before anything is cut: centred on the room, or on the fireplace rather than the geometric middle. These designs have a top and a bottom, which fixes which way each piece runs where a hall meets a staircase.
Worth knowing
Expect a substantial offcut: on a 2.92m repeat there is no taking a piece from the middle without the length either side going somewhere. Repeats vary enormously across the thirteen designs — Jet Damask is 1.07m down — so ask before you settle on one. Left where the roll happens to start, a design this large looks like a mistake.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.
