Anatolia is Ulster's traditional oriental Axminster, woven in Portadown in an 80% wool, 20% nylon blend. Twenty-nine designs across four families — Medallion, Scroll, Shirvan and Runner — drawing on the carpet traditions of Asia Minor. The unusual part is that the stair and hall runners are a separate 0.69m product rather than a width of the broadloom.

The stair and hall runners are a separate 0.69m (27") product, not a width of the broadloom. Their colourways carry the same names as the broadloom, so a runner on the stairs can be coordinated with broadloom in the hall.

What it’s like to live with
Winders, and a 91cm repeat
Medallion and Shirvan repeat at 91cm, Scroll at 46cm, all self match — the pattern lines up straight across the width rather than stepping sideways. Expect more wastage than a plain, since the pattern is set out before anything is cut. On winders and turns every riser is cut to keep it true, and Scroll's 46cm comes back into line soonest on an awkward flight.
The runners are a separate 0.69m product
They are their own product with a woven border, not the broadloom cut down, which is why the edges finish as they do. Eight colourways — the six broadloom names plus Lotus and Souk — so the stairs coordinate with the hall. A runner leaves the outer edge of each tread exposed, so the timber wants to be in a state you are happy to show.
Where it works
Halls, stairs and landings above all, where the pattern breaks up tracking and marking in a way no plain will. At 80% wool the pile recovers from furniture rather than staying flat, and it is rated extra heavy wear and moth proofed. It suits a dining room or a traditional sitting room too.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

The scale of an oriental pattern never reads right on a screen — a medallion that looks modest in a photograph can fill a small hall. The Lostock Hall displays put runners and broadloom side by side. Our lighting only half settles the colour, so we will book a sample out, or bring them to your stairs and measure up at no charge.
