Glendun

Glendun is a short range and deliberately so: five designs — Canterbury, Rosemoor, Blue Lorenzo, Blue Caliph and Samarkand — all large-scale traditional and oriental patterns, woven in an 80% wool, 20% nylon blend at Portadown. It is for rooms with floor to spare, because the patterns are drawn at a scale that needs space to make sense.

What it’s like to live with

Big rooms are the point

In a large room a large repeat is the thing that works. A small all-over pattern spread across a twenty-foot lounge reads as noise; a 91cm design gives four or five whole repeats across the width, which the eye takes in as a composed floor rather than a texture. It fills a generous Victorian or Edwardian reception room properly.

Half drop, and where the pattern lands

Canterbury repeats at 91cm and Rosemoor at 97cm, both half drop, so joining two drops needs up to a full repeat of length to bring it back into register. Expect offcuts. At that size the fitter is also deciding where the design falls — whether a whole motif sits centred under the bay window, and which wall gets the part repeat.

Worth knowing

In a smaller room the same pattern turns against you: fragments cut against every wall and no whole repeat anywhere. Under about three and a half metres across we would point you at a smaller-pattern range instead. Where it does fit, it is forgiving of tracking and rated extra heavy wear, with a tog of 1.8 — insulation rather than quality.

See it

A sample cannot show you a 97cm repeat — you are looking at a fraction of the design — so it is worth seeing the larger pieces on display at Lostock Hall for a proper sense of scale.
