Purely Natural Chroma

Woven Axminster · 8 undyed plain colours in a velvet finish · four widths from 1.00m to 4.00m

HomeFlooringCarpetBrandsBrintonsPurely Natural Chroma

Purely Natural Chroma takes the eight undyed fleece shades of the Purely Natural plains and weaves them as an Axminster with a smooth, velvety surface instead of a twist. A twist pile stands up in points; a velvet is cut level and lies as one continuous surface, which is where the depth and the slight sheen come from. 100% wool, rated Heavy Domestic, in four widths.

Purely Natural Chroma designs and colours

These are the same eight shade names used by Purely Natural Twist, because both ranges draw on the same undyed fleece colours. The carpets themselves are not the same. Twist is a Wilton twist pile at 1288 g/m2, Extra Heavy Domestic. Chroma is an Axminster velvet at 1002 g/m2, Heavy Domestic. If you have been given a shade name without being told which range it came from, it is worth asking which of the two you were shown.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

From the shop floor

What it’s like to live with

Why it shades, and where the depth comes from

Because the pile is cut level and lies one way, light runs either along it or against it, so the carpet reads lighter at one end of a room than the other. That is where the depth comes from. It is also why you get shading — light and dark patches where a foot, a chair leg or the vacuum has pushed the pile back.

Which rooms suit it

Extra Heavy Domestic is the rating for a hall and stairs taking the whole family; Heavy Domestic is for rooms properly used but not thrashed. So Chroma belongs in a main bedroom, sitting room, study or dining room. Want the same shades in the hall too? Take the Twist there — same fleece colours, so the two sit together happily.

Worth knowing

Shading is a characteristic of the construction, not a defect, and it cannot be brushed out permanently. Some people love it, some never settle to it, so a sample wants a few days on your own floor first. Vacuum with plain suction — a beater bar drags a velvet pile about and makes shading worse. Nothing bleach-based on undyed wool.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

Shading is the whole question here, and a photograph cannot show it: a still image freezes the pile in one direction, and the effect only exists when you move. Walk across a piece on the displays and look back at it. We will book a sample out, and bring the Twist alongside if you want the two compared at home.

See Purely Natural Chroma in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
