Woven Axminster · 14 designs in four undyed wool shades

HomeFlooringCarpetBrandsBrintonsPurely Natural Flora and Fauna

Flora and Fauna is the drawn botanical in Brintons' Purely Natural collection, and no dye goes anywhere near the yarn. The four shades — Cloud, Graphite, Fossil and Bamboo — are the natural colours of the fleece itself. Seven designs, each woven in two of them, giving fourteen carpets. Woven Axminster, extra heavy domestic, one 4.00m width. The company was founded in Kidderminster in 1783.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

From the shop floor

What it’s like to live with

How the pattern reads

A woodland stag, bracken, fallen leaves, grasses, wild flowers and flowering vines, drawn loosely enough that from standing height they read as texture rather than a picture on the floor. The across repeat is a metre on every design, so four full repeats sit across the width and the pattern settles evenly in a room.

One width, varying repeats

4.00m is the only width, so a room under four metres is usually seam-free; go wider and the join has to fall where the repeat allows as well as where the room would prefer. The repeat varies by design too — Woodland Stag Cloud a metre down on a half drop, Fallen Leaves Bamboo 1.31m with no match at all. No runner width, so a staircase comes off broadloom.

Worth knowing

Undyed wool varies slightly and has nothing in it to fade, which suits a south-facing room. The cotton, jute and natural rubber latex backing wants a dry, sound floor, so a new screed needs to be properly dry before fitting. Plain suction rather than an aggressive beater bar, blot spills, and no bleach-based cleaners.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

Undyed shades photograph badly — a screen forces them either grey or yellow, and Cloud against Bamboo only really exists as a distinction in daylight. See the designs on the displays, where you can stand back far enough to judge a metre repeat. Then a sample booked out, or we bring them to the house and measure up.

See Purely Natural Flora and Fauna in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
