Brintons

Fresco

Woven Axminster · 2 designs, both in sage

Fresco is a short range: two patterned Axminsters, Whispering Grass Sage and Summer Breeze Sage, both in the same soft green. There is no long colour card to work through — the choice is simply which design suits the room. 80% wool with 20% nylon at 1,549 g/m2, a one metre half-drop repeat, rated Extra Heavy Domestic. Brintons was founded in Kidderminster in 1783.

Fresco designs and colours

One point worth clearing up, because it catches people out regularly. This Fresco is not the same range as Purely Natural Fresco. Purely Natural is Brintons' undyed British wool sub-brand, with a cotton, jute and natural rubber latex backing. This Fresco is a dyed carpet in a wool and nylon blend, and a different thing entirely. If you have seen a Fresco somewhere and liked it, tell us which one and we will make sure you are looking at the right range.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with

Where it works

At 1,549 g/m2 and rated Extra Heavy Domestic, it will take a sitting room, a dining room, a hall or a set of stairs without complaint. Sage helps: a mid-tone green sits between showing every mark and looking flat, hides ordinary daily traffic better than a pale plain will, and sits happily with wood and cream paintwork.

The half-drop, and the stairs

A one metre repeat on a half-drop is about as straightforward as patterned Axminster gets: the design steps sideways as well as forwards, so the two sides of a seam are offset by half a repeat. On a staircase each riser and tread is cut in order, so the design keeps stepping the right way up the flight.

Worth knowing

One 4.00m width only, so a room wider than that takes a seam and there is no runner width. Allow for more offcut than a plain needs, since the pattern is set out before anything is cut. Both designs are in the same green, so two rooms that look into one another can take one design each without clashing.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

Greens are the shade a screen gets most wrong: sage can come out grey on one monitor and khaki on another. Both designs are on our Lostock Hall displays, side by side, and it settles in a couple of minutes. We will book a sample out to check the green against your own walls in daylight, or bring both to the house and measure up.

See Fresco in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
