New Living is Brintons' easy-going contemporary Axminster: four designs — Wave, Cord, Plaid and Quartz — in two colourways each. A soft ripple, a fine ribbed line, a light check and a small broken texture, all drawn small and kept quiet in colour so they sit together from room to room without any one of them taking over. Brintons was founded in Kidderminster in 1783.

What it’s like to live with
Small repeats, easy on stairs
Quartz repeats every 0.17m down the roll and 0.50m across; Wave every 0.35m down and 0.25m across. Small figures for a woven Axminster, and on a self match the pattern comes round so often that wastage on an awkward room is closer to a plain's. On a winder a small repeat lets the fitter keep the lines true across a tapered tread.
Where it works
At 1169 g/m² this is a lighter, more supple carpet, rated Heavy Domestic: bedrooms, a sitting room, a landing, and a hall in a house that is not a thoroughfare. The 20% nylon helps the pile spring back from furniture legs, and the quiet colours mean several designs can share a floor without arguing.
Worth knowing
Wave, Cord and Quartz look like fine textured plains from the doorway and only show themselves close up; Plaid reads as a pattern at normal distance, and is the one to think hardest about in a small room. One width only, 4.00m, and no runner widths, so a wide room needs a seam.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

Small-scale designs are the ones photographs mislead you about most — on a screen a Cord or a Quartz looks busier and more contrasty than it is on a floor. Stand back from a full-size piece on the displays at Lostock Hall. The two colourways are close cousins, so we will book a pair out, or bring them to you and measure up.

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening.
