Grange is Ulster's plain woven Wilton, made in Portadown in an 80% wool, 20% nylon blend and rated for extra heavy wear. Forty-nine colours run from pale neutrals through deeper greys and greens to one proper red. If you like the construction of a patterned Axminster but not the pattern, this is usually where we send you next.

What it’s like to live with
Where the seam falls
On a patterned carpet a join disappears into the design; on a plain it is the only interruption in an unbroken floor. A seam wants to run away from the main window, out of the walking line, and never across a doorway. Widths run 5m, 4m, 3m, 2m and 1m, so a room or landing often goes down in one piece.
Pile direction, decided before the first cut
Wilton pile lies one way, and two pieces laid facing differently read as two shades under a window even off the same roll. Down the stairs the pile should run the same way on every tread, and at a doorway between two rooms in one colour both pieces must run the same way. No repeat to set out, so wastage comes down to room shape.
Shading is not wear
Grange shows footfall and vacuum marks more readily than a pattern would. That shading is the pile lying over, not wear, and it settles into a sheen rather than getting worse. In a busy hall a mid-tone or broken colour — Millstone, Partridge, Moorland — hides tracking better than the palest or darkest shades. Never over-wet wool; blot spills.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

Colour is the whole decision on a plain, and a screen will not give it honestly — the same grey reads differently under a north-facing window than under showroom light. All forty-nine are on display at Lostock Hall, and we will book samples out so you can watch two or three shades through a day at home — or bring them to you and measure up.

Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening.
