Perpetual Textures solves a particular problem: wanting the practicality of a pattern without the room looking patterned. All ten designs work by texture and tone rather than colour contrast — Barleycorn, Layered Herringbone, Houndstooth, Celestial Cord, Spot, Maze and the rest — drawn small and woven in close shades. A woven Axminster rated Extra Heavy Domestic. Brintons was founded in Kidderminster in 1783.

What it’s like to live with
Where it works
Halls, stairs and landings first. Rated Extra Heavy Domestic, it is built for the parts of a house that never rest, and a small geometric in close tones is fine camouflage — tracking down a hall, the darker line at the top of a staircase, the shadow a doormat leaves. From standing height it reads as tone; the drawing only appears a step away.
Stairs and seams
A repeat of around 250 to 330mm means most of a riser and tread pair carries a full pattern cycle, so a flight reads consistently bottom to top. Directional designs like Layered Herringbone and Celestial Cord need a decision before cutting: lines up the stairs or across them. On a self match a landing seam disappears if both pieces are cut in step, and is glaring if they are not.
Worth knowing
One width only, 4.00m, so a wider room takes a seam and there are no runner widths. A geometric shows a misaligned join far more plainly than a floral does. On stairs the underlay, more than the carpet, decides how the nosings look in a decade, so it goes down in a firm grade.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

A textural design barely photographs at all: on a screen it either flattens into a colour or looks far more striped than it is, so it has to be seen at floor level and at full size, which the displays at Lostock Hall let you do. Because the tones sit so close, we will book a sample out to lay in your own hall.
