Glenavy
Woven Axminster · 22 designs including four coordinating stair and hall runners
Glenavy is Ulster's traditional patterned Axminster, and usually the range people have in mind when they come in asking for a proper patterned carpet. Twenty-two designs drawing on Persian and oriental motifs, in a wool-rich 80/20 blend. Four come as matching stair and hall runners, which is the detail that tends to decide it.
Glenavy designs and colours
Coordinating stair and hall runners are made in some of the designs, so the hall and the stairs above it can be laid in the same pattern.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with
Where it works
Halls, stairs and landings, above all. In a busy hall a pattern forgives tracking and marking in a way no plain does, and at 80% wool the pile recovers from furniture rather than flattening. It suits a dining room or a traditional sitting room. Four designs come as matching stair and hall runners, so a whole run reads as one carpet turning the corner.
On the stairs
The designs repeat at around 94cm on a half drop, so the pattern steps sideways as well as forwards. In a straight room that asks little. On a turn or a winder every riser has to be cut to keep the pattern true, which is where a fitter who handles woven carpet regularly earns their money.
Worth knowing
Glenavy is rated heavy wear rather than extra heavy. For a domestic hall, stairs and landing that is ample — if yours is an unusually hard-worked house, look at Glendun or Beaumont alongside it. Expect more wastage than a plain, because the pattern has to be set out before anything is cut. Worth deciding broadloom and runner together, so the whole job is planned at once.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

A 94cm repeat seen as a small swatch tells you almost nothing about how it will look down a hall, so the full range is on display at Lostock Hall where the runners and broadloom sit side by side. Our lighting only takes the colour half the way, so we will book a sample out for you to take home for a few days — or bring them to you and measure up.
See Glenavy in your own light
Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
