The best carpet types for stairs
Twist pile — the classic choice
A twist pile carpet is the go-to for stairs, and for good reason. The tightly twisted fibres resist crushing and footprints, hide everyday wear, and cope brilliantly with traffic. It’s the safest all-round choice for most homes.
Loop pile — durable, with one caveat
Loop pile carpets (including Berber styles) are extremely hard-wearing and great in hallways. On stairs, choose a small, tight loop — large loops can occasionally catch on the stair nosing or on pet claws, so it’s worth taking advice on the specific range.
What to be cautious with
Deep, soft saxony piles feel wonderful underfoot in a bedroom, but they flatten and show wear quickly on stairs — better saved for low-traffic rooms.
Which fibre lasts best on stairs?

- Polypropylene — excellent value, brilliant stain resistance and bleach-cleanable; a hugely popular, practical stair choice.
- Nylon — the most resilient synthetic, springing back well under heavy use; ideal if you want maximum longevity.
- Wool and wool-rich twists — naturally resilient and beautiful, hiding dirt well; a premium choice that ages gracefully.
- Polyester — wonderfully soft, but better suited to lounges and bedrooms than the busiest stairs, as it can flatten under very heavy traffic.
For most families, a quality polypropylene or wool-rich twist hits the sweet spot of durability, looks and value.
Don’t overlook the underlay
A common mistake is spending on the carpet and skimping on what’s underneath. On stairs, a good-quality, firm underlay is essential — it protects the carpet from wear, improves comfort and safety, and significantly extends its life.
