Renaissance is the bold end of the Brintons traditional collection: six designs worked at a large scale in strong, deep colour — Palmette in gold, ivory and green, alongside Amber Kashan, Versailles Pearl and Javanese Amber. These are floor-first carpets, meant to be the thing a room is arranged around rather than a background to it, and they want plain walls and quiet curtains to work against.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with
Give it a room with floor in it
The repeat is a metre or more. A room four by five metres shows around twenty repeats, enough for the eye to settle; a box bedroom might show four — too few to read as a pattern. It wants a drawing room or a generous hall. On Palmette and Javanese the repeat is 1.13m down against 1.00m across, so agree which way the roll runs.
On the stairs
A rise and going together come to well under half a repeat, so the pattern travels up the flight rather than restating itself each step. On a wide straight flight that looks well. On a tight turning stair it is harder to control, and a small-sett range is usually the better answer.
Worth knowing
All six are self match, so the pattern lines up straight across the width rather than stepping sideways. Even so, set it out on paper, centre it deliberately, and expect more offcut than a plain. A pattern this deep is forgiving of everyday marking. Note that Renaissance Classics shares the name and none of the designs.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

Stand back from a full-size piece at Lostock Hall, where we will set the two Renaissance ranges side by side, then book a sample out.

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening.
