Royal Marquis Collection

Woven Axminster · 4 small-scale designs in 10 colours each — 40 in all

HomeFlooringCarpetBrandsBrintonsRoyal Marquis Collection

Royal Marquis is a small-scale, all-over patterned Axminster: four designs — Royal Flake, Royal Diamond, Royal Coronet and Royal Trellis — each woven in the same ten colours, which gives forty combinations. The patterns are tight enough to read as a worked texture in a single colour from standing height, so here the colour carries the room rather than the design. Brintons was founded in Kidderminster in 1783.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with

A four-centimetre repeat changes everything

Royal Diamond repeats every 5 centimetres, Royal Trellis every 4. On a self match at that size the pattern comes round almost immediately, so there is barely any setting out: a seam can go where the room wants it and the offcut is close to a plain's. Every tread carries the whole design, so winders stop being a problem. Royal Flake's 25 centimetre repeat asks more attention.

The decision is colour, not design

The four patterns behave much the same underfoot; the ten colours do not. Intense Black, French Navy and Hunter Green go serious and formal, and want good light to stop a hall feeling closed in. Antique Gold, Tawny Brown and Slate Grey are easier to live with. The two reds are a commitment. The name is a product name — there is no royal connection.

Where it works

A dense, small, multi-colour pattern hides tracking and the odd mark in a way a plain does not. That is why this sort of carpet ends up in halls and on stairs. At 1,462 g/m2 and rated Extra Heavy Domestic it takes the traffic. One width only, 4.00m, so a wider room takes a seam.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

The design is small enough that a swatch shows you all of it, so this is a range you can judge on a modest piece. Colour is the harder question, because shades this saturated shift between showroom light and a north-facing hall. See all four designs at Lostock Hall, narrow it to two or three colours, and we will book those out.

See Royal Marquis Collection in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
