Lumora

Woven Wilton · 10 plain colours · five widths from 1.00m to 4.57m

Lumora is Brintons' plain wool Wilton, and it is the deepest carpet either of our woven mills makes — 3205 g/m² of pile, close to three times what a lighter woven carpet carries. You feel it the moment you stand on it. Ten quiet colours, 100% wool, rated extra heavy domestic, and unusually it comes in five widths.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with

Where it works

Bedrooms, sitting rooms and landings, where a carpet is there to be walked on barefoot. It is rated extra heavy domestic so it will take a hall and stairs perfectly well, but the depth of it is rather wasted somewhere you only ever cross in shoes.

Five widths

Lumora runs 4.57m, 4.00m, 3.00m, 2.00m and 1.00m, so the width can suit the room rather than the room having to suit the width. Most bedrooms and sitting rooms take a 4.00m or 4.57m with no seam at all — and on a plain a seam has no pattern to hide behind, so avoiding one is always the better answer. The 1.00m is a runner width for stairs.

Worth knowing

Depth of pile means depth underfoot, so check your doors clear before you commit, particularly internal doors that already sit close to the floor. A plain shows pile direction too, so every piece has to run the same way or one colour reads as two. Underlay wants to be firm rather than soft; a soft one under a carpet this heavy exaggerates every footmark.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

Ten quiet neutrals separate far more clearly in daylight than under our lights, and depth like this is something you have to stand on rather than look at. The displays are at Lostock Hall, and we will book a sample out so you can put it down at home, walk on it barefoot and see the colour in your own rooms morning and evening.

See Lumora in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
