Beaumont is a single plaid design woven as an Axminster in an 80% wool, 20% nylon blend on Ulster's looms in Portadown, offered in ten colourways. It is a check rather than a motif, which is why it suits houses where a full Persian design would be too much but a plain would feel flat.

What it’s like to live with
Where it works
Halls, stairs and landings, and studies or snugs. A plaid breaks up tracking in a busy hall, and at 80% wool the pile recovers from furniture rather than staying flat, with the nylon there for abrasion resistance. Against patterned curtains or wallpaper, a low-contrast colourway such as Chalk Downs or Turtle Dove reads almost as a textured plain.
Setting out a check
The repeat is 30cm, self match, so the pattern runs straight across the width rather than stepping sideways, and wastage stays modest. What a check will not forgive is drift: the eye follows the line of the squares into the skirting and reads any error as a crooked wall. Setting out is done against the door lines and the run of the hall.
On the stairs
A small check behaves well down a flight: the lines run true across treads and risers, and because the repeat is short you get a full pattern on every step rather than a fragment of a large motif. On winders every riser is cut on its own — slow work at the start, invisible when finished.

Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.
