Bell Twist is Brintons' plain wool twist Wilton, and the plain we sell most of. The yarn is given extra turns in the spinning and then set, so each tuft stands as its own point rather than lying over with its neighbours. Thirty-six colours to choose from, 80% wool with 20% nylon, rated Extra Heavy Domestic, in five widths.

Bell Twist designs and colours

Three of the colours — Duck Egg, Cornish Grey and Steel — come from the Laura Ashley colourway set and are woven to the same specification as the rest.

Not pictured: Steel — this colourway is in the range and on display in the showroom, but we do not yet have a photograph of the pile good enough to put next to the rest.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

From the shop floor

What it’s like to live with

Where it works

A twist takes a footfall and springs back rather than lying down and shading, so it copes with a hall and a staircase in a way a smooth velvet pile does not — the quiet rooms as readily as the busy ones. Most of the palette is quiet stones and greys, with proper colour in Windermere Lake and Scottish Pine.

Five widths, and both ends are useful

The 4.57m roll takes most sitting rooms across in one piece, with no seam in the floor at all. The 1.00m is a genuine runner width, which changes what is possible on a staircase — a narrow roll can go up a flight rather than a piece cut down from broadloom.

Worth knowing

A plain has nothing to hide behind, so pile direction decides everything. Two pieces from the same batch laid pile-to-pile read as two different colours meeting at the join, and nothing can be done once it is cut; on stairs the same rule settles every tread. Lay it over a firm underlay — a soft one lets a twist pile move and blunts the springiness.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

A flat plain is judged on colour alone, and colour is what a screen gets wrong — half these greys look identical online and nothing like each other on a floor. They are on our displays at Lostock Hall, where near-neighbours can be set side by side with the Heather alongside. We will book a sample out to take home, or bring them to you.

See Bell Twist in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
