Classic Florals Nouveau is the floral range: three patterns, each in four colourings. Toile Papillon is a light scattered floral, Toile Empire the same idea worked more densely, and Parterre the most structured — a formal garden layout rather than a loose spray. All twelve are woven axminster in 80% wool and 20% nylon, rated Extra Heavy Domestic. Brintons was founded in Kidderminster in 1783.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with
Where it works
Florals earn their keep where you walk through rather than sit. A hall, a stair, a landing: the scattered pattern breaks up footfall marking, so a floral looks tidy long after a plain has developed a visible track. Papillon in grey or silver is quiet enough for a bedroom. All twelve are rated Extra Heavy Domestic.
Parterre repeats every two metres
Woven 4.00m wide, a full roll holds exactly two repeats of Parterre. In a narrower room, which part of the repeat you keep is a deliberate choice, and a seam has to land where the design can absorb it. The Toiles set out more conventionally, but flowers grow in a direction — two pieces laid opposite ways look wrong, so we mark orientation at the survey.
Choosing between the twelve
Toile Empire Noir is the opposite proposition to the light Papillons: a dark floral wants to be the main event, with plain walls around it. Take care with names too — silver and grey in the two toiles are not the same grey, and blue appears three times among the twelve, meaning three different blues.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

A scattered pattern looks busy in miniature and calm across a floor, so a small piece misleads badly here. The twelve are on our Lostock Hall displays, where the three designs sit side by side and the greys, silvers and blues can be compared honestly. We will book a sample out to stand in your own hall, or bring them over and measure up.
