Purely Natural Fresco

Woven Axminster · 2 designs in two undyed shades — four carpets in all

HomeFlooringCarpetBrandsBrintonsPurely Natural Fresco

Purely Natural Fresco is the undyed version of a design Brintons have been weaving for years: two patterns, Whispering Grass and Summer Breeze, each in two natural fleece shades, Mink and Cloud. Four carpets, and the shortness of it is the appeal — there is no long colour card to work through, and most people know which corner they are in within a minute.

Purely Natural Fresco designs and colours

Two designs, each in two undyed shades. Brintons also weave Fresco in dyed yarn as part of their standard Fresco range, in a soft sage and to a different specification — a heavier 80/20 blend on a half-drop. Same two drawings, different carpet, so it is worth naming which Fresco you mean.

Summer Breeze 2 colourways

Whispering Grass 2 colourways

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with

Four full repeats across the width

Self match means the pattern lines up straight across a seam rather than stepping sideways. A one-metre across repeat into a 4.00m roll gives exactly four full repeats, with no part-repeat at the selvedge, which is why it sits so evenly in a room. It repeats a metre down too, so each stair tread takes about a third of the design — straightforward on a straight flight, more thought on winders.

Mink or Cloud

Both patterns are drawn loosely — grasses and drifting shapes rather than hard outlines — and the flecking of undyed wool softens them further. That is what lets them work in an ordinary sitting room or bedroom where a formal pattern would take over. Mink is the warmer shade, Cloud the cooler and paler; the design shows more on Mink.

Worth knowing

Extra Heavy Domestic, so it goes anywhere in the house. Expect more wastage than a plain, less than a big traditional Axminster. One width only, so a room over four metres takes a seam and there is no runner width. Undyed wool has nothing in it to fade.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

With four carpets to choose between, seeing them takes five minutes and settles it. All four are on the displays, where you can look at a full metre repeat rather than a cropped photograph and judge how strongly the design reads across a room. Mink and Cloud change with the daylight, so a sample goes out, or we bring all four over and measure up.

See Purely Natural Fresco in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
