Purely Natural Marrakesh
Woven Axminster · 3 Moroccan-inspired designs in three undyed shades — 9 colourways
Marrakesh is the geometric in Brintons' undyed collection: three Moroccan-derived motifs — Kashmir, Kadiz and Khalyk — each woven in three natural fleece shades, giving nine colourways. The motifs are small and set close together, so from standing height the effect is closer to a woven texture than to a figured carpet. Brintons trace their history back to a founding in Kidderminster in 1783.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with
Where it works
Twenty centimetres into a four-metre roll is twenty full repeats straight across, so the pattern reads as an all-over surface rather than motifs you can count. Stand in a doorway and you see texture; crouch down and you see the geometry. Extra Heavy Domestic, and quiet enough at walking distance for a hall, stairs and landing.
Half-drop, and the stairs
The pattern steps sideways as it travels down the roll, so at a seam one piece sits half a repeat against the other. On a geometric the eye tracks those regular lines across a join, so setting out comes first. The step is only ten centimetres and the down repeat under half a metre, so each tread and riser still carries a full repeat.
Worth knowing
Grey is the coolest and shows the motif most clearly, Ecru the palest and quietest, Linen between them. All three are fleece colours rather than dye colours, so they vary slightly and cannot fade. One width only, so a wider room takes a seam and there is no runner width. Vacuum with plain suction rather than a beater bar.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

A small geometric is the pattern most often misjudged from a photograph, because a close-up makes the motif look far bigger and bolder than it is on a floor. On the displays you can see from across the shop how quiet it really is, with Kashmir, Kadiz and Khalyk side by side. Then a sample out, or we bring them over and measure up.
See Purely Natural Marrakesh in your own light
Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
