Purely Natural Plaids

Woven Axminster · 8 undyed checks in four natural shades

HomeFlooringCarpetBrandsBrintonsPurely Natural Plaids

Purely Natural Plaids is the check in Brintons' undyed collection — eight woven plaids in the natural colours of British fleece, with names that make no secret of where the idea came from. The checks are small and quiet, drawn in tone rather than contrast, so from standing height they read as textured neutral, not tartan on the floor. Woven Axminster, extra heavy domestic, one 4.00m width.

Purely Natural Plaids designs and colours

Four undyed shades run through the range — Pebble, Stone, Grey and Graphite — with the design deciding the scale and weight of the check rather than the colour.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with

Halls and stairs

Halls and staircases are where this range earns itself: a small tonal check breaks up tracking better than a plain. Repeats run from 18cm to 33cm, so offcuts stay usable. At 18cm every tread carries a full repeat and more, the check stays square to the nosing, and a winder cuts without the pattern jumping.

Which line in the room wins

A plaid is straight lines crossing at right angles, and the eye reads them against the skirting and the door frame. Older houses around Preston are rarely square, so usually the longest sightline wins — the one you see walking in — the check set true to that and allowed to run out against something less noticeable at the back. Decided before cutting.

Worth knowing

Brintons list no formal step at a seam, but that does not mean the lines look after themselves: on Maclennan Grey, where the repeat is 33cm square, a seam a centimetre out is obvious from the doorway. One width only, so a wider room takes a seam; no runner width. Plain suction, nothing bleach-based on undyed wool.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

Checks are judged on scale, and scale is what a screen destroys — an 18cm repeat and a 33cm repeat look identical on a phone, and on a floor they are two different carpets. See them on the displays from the distance you will really be looking at them. Then a sample out to lay against your own skirting, or we come and measure up.

See Purely Natural Plaids in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
