The Velvet Collection is Brintons' plain velvet: a short, smooth, tightly packed pile with no texture in it at all, woven on a Wilton loom in an 80% wool, 20% nylon blend. Fifteen colours named after people, from Benedict Cream and Alice Silver at the quiet end to Anne Garnet, Sinclair Navy and Victoria Black at the other. The firm was founded in Kidderminster in 1783.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with
Before anything else: a velvet shades
You will see footprints across it, the lines the vacuum leaves, and patches that look lighter or darker depending which way the pile was last walked. That is not wear and not a fault — it is what light does on a dense, evenly cut pile. Some people consider it the character of the carpet; some find it irritating for years.
Where the weight tells
At 2,215 g/m2 the pile is stiff enough to stand back up rather than stay pressed flat, so marks tend to lift with a vacuum rather than settle. Rated extra heavy domestic, it suits a dining room, sitting room or principal bedroom — rooms where the floor is looked at as much as walked on. If shading would bother you, a twist or a heather is the sensible alternative.
Pile direction, and the narrow widths that help
Every tread and riser must run the same way, and so must each side of a seam — turn one piece round and it reads as a different shade in daylight. There are 1.00m and 2.00m widths, so a flight or narrow landing often needs no seam. Our fitters set the pile out before a knife touches it.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

A velvet is judged in daylight and at a decent size: a small swatch under showroom lights shows no shading at all, and shading is what you most need to see. Come to the displays and we will walk you along a piece to watch the colour change as you move past. Then a sample out, or we bring them to you and measure up.

Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening.
