Open Spaces

Open Spaces, branded Open Spaces Laneve on Ulster's own pages, is their tufted loop wool range: five designs and fifty-eight colourways between them — Queenstown, Auckland, Dubai, Napier and Raglan, the last of them a single colourway. Auckland, Queenstown and Napier are 100% New Zealand wool; Dubai is 100% wool. Loop is not woven — the yarn is punched into a backing and left uncut — which gives a textured, hard-wearing and noticeably more casual finish.

What it’s like to live with

Where it works

Halls, landings and living rooms — heavy wear, casual in finish. A loop resists flattening in doorways and traffic lines and hides vacuum marks better than a velvet pile. Tog runs 1.2 on Auckland, Queenstown and Napier and 1.6 on Dubai, so Dubai feels warmer over a cold solid floor.

Seams and direction

A loop seam has nothing to fall over it — no loose ends, as on a cut pile — so a join a fraction out stays visible. The cut runs between two rows of loops, away from the sightline. No repeat is stated to match, but texture has direction: pieces in one run must lie the same way round or the light reads two shades.

Snagging is the thing to know first

An uncut loop can be pulled by a claw or an unguarded beater bar, and the pull can run. With cats, or a dog with long claws, we will steer you to a cut pile. On stairs a loop left slack, or dragged over a nosing, is the one that catches later. Snip a pull level rather than tugging.

See it

Texture is the one thing a photograph cannot show — a loop only reads properly with light across it and your hand on it. All fifty-eight colourways are on display at Lostock Hall, and we will book a sample out so you can see how the loop sits in your own hall light. Or we bring samples to you and measure up, free of charge.
