Sheriden

Woven Axminster · 18 designs — 6 colourways in 3 formats, including runners

Sheriden is built as a system rather than a list of patterns. Six colourways — Regency Cream, Royal Blue, Bordeaux and Royal Red among them — each come in three coordinating formats: a Cameo, a framed motif; a Pindot, an all-over small dot; and a Runner sized for a staircase. Eighteen in all.

Sheriden designs and colours

Each colourway comes as a Cameo, a Pindot and a matching Runner, so a hall, stairs and landing can be done as one scheme. The remaining runners stand alone rather than matching a wide width.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with

Which format goes where

A hall, stairs and landing is the hardest scheme in the house: three spaces seen at once that wear differently. The Cameo is the boldest, and works where you stand still and look at the floor — a lounge or dining room. The Pindot has no direction or centre, so it suits a landing cut about by doorways and a bannister.

Setting out the pattern

The Regency Cream Cameo repeats at 31cm, self match — the pattern lines up straight across the width rather than stepping sideways. That means modest wastage, seams that match without much hunting, and a whole pattern on a tread. The Cameo is set out square to the hall, not to the roll, because a hall is rarely a true rectangle. Repeats vary by design.

On the stairs

At the bottom step the Cameo must reach the riser on a sensible part of its repeat, so the frame is not sliced through in view of the front door. The runner is started so the same feature falls in the same place on every tread. At 80% wool the pile recovers from stair traffic, and the nylon carries the abrasion on the nosings.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

The whole point of Sheriden is how the three formats look next to one another, which photographs will not give you. The Lostock Hall displays let you lay Cameo, Pindot and Runner side by side, and we will book samples out so you can hold all three against your own hall, stairs and landing. Or we bring them to you and measure the whole scheme up.

See Sheriden in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
