Tazmin

Woven Axminster · 21 designs across 3 formats, including a stair and hall runner

Tazmin is a small-scale Ulster Axminster, woven in Portadown in an 80% wool, 20% nylon blend around one idea: a quiet all-over pattern that works everywhere in a house. Three formats — a Motif, a Pindot and a purpose-made Stair and Hall Runner — each in seven colourways, twenty-one designs in all. The repeat is 23cm, short by woven standards.

Tazmin designs and colours

Every colourway runs across all the formats — Motif, Pindot and the Stair and Hall Runner — so the runner and the rooms agree. The runner is made in the 0.91m (3') width.

A photograph of carpet on a screen is only ever a guide — wool takes colour differently to a monitor, and daylight in your own room changes it again. The samples are on display in the showroom, and we are happy to book one out for you to live with for a few days before you decide.

What it’s like to live with

A short repeat on the stairs

Self match means the pattern lines up straight across the width, so a seam matches with little pulled off the roll — a large design may lose a metre bringing the next length into line; 23cm asks for inches. On the stairs a short repeat gives complete pattern on every tread rather than a fragment, and on a winder it stays square while the tread turns.

The runner people miss

The 0.91m width is made for stairs and halls — a runner over a wooden staircase with the boards showing either side, or a defined strip down a long hall. It comes in the same seven colourways as the Motif and Pindot, so the runner and the rooms agree.

Heavy wear, not extra heavy

Tazmin is rated heavy wear, not extra heavy, and for most halls, stairs, landings and living rooms that is sufficient. If yours is a large household with a front door taking constant traffic, we would point you at an extra heavy range instead. At 80% wool the pile recovers from furniture. Vacuum regularly and blot spills.

Why it matters who lays it

Woven carpet is fitted differently

We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.

That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.

A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.

None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.

See it

A pindot and a small motif look identical on a screen and quite different across a room. All three formats are on display at Lostock Hall, and because a small pattern reads differently from a doorway than at arm's length, we book a sample out to live with. Or we come to you and say whether the runner or full width suits your staircase.

See Tazmin in your own light

Woven carpet never reads correctly on a screen, and it rarely reads correctly under showroom lighting either. Come and look at the displays, then take a sample home with you — we are happy to book one out so you can live with it for a few days and see it against your own walls, at your own windows, morning and evening. If it is easier, we will bring samples out to you and measure up while we are there.
