Vescent is Ulster's contemporary Axminster, woven in Portadown in an 80% wool, 20% nylon blend. Where their traditional ranges give you motifs, Vescent gives you structure and surface: ribbed lines, blocked geometry and cloudy mottled grounds. Twenty-one design-colourways across six families, which Ulster position for larger, more luxurious family spaces. It is made in a single 4m width, and that is worth knowing early.

What it’s like to live with
Which family suits the room
Half the range is linear — Linea, Nexus, Calx — and straight lines are honest about a house: lay them and the eye reads the carpet against the skirting. Nebula and Vapor have no line to betray anything, so they suit awkward rooms and forgive everyday marking. Each tuft is inserted individually from a fixed palette, which holds close tones without going muddy.
Squaring to a room that isn't square
Very few rooms are truly square — walls bow, chimney breasts sit off-centre, extensions rarely meet the original brickwork at a right angle. On a linear design we set square to the dominant sightline, usually the longest wall or the line you see first from the door, and let the discrepancy fall where nobody looks.
One 4m width, and where the seam goes
Anything wider than 4m needs a seam, and on Linea, Nexus and Calx it is planned before cutting: it runs with the lines rather than across them, and falls where the light does not rake along it. The repeat runs roughly 90cm by 100cm and varies by design. A straight match sets out simply, but millimetres out at a join show.
Why it matters who lays it
Woven carpet is fitted differently
We have been selling Axminster from this shop for over sixty-five years, and our fitters are time-served men who work with woven carpet regularly rather than once in a blue moon.
That matters more than it used to. Something like ninety-five per cent of what goes down in British homes today is tufted, so a great many fitters have simply never had much woven carpet through their hands.
A woven carpet asks for things a tufted one does not. A pattern has to be set out on paper before anything is cut. A repeat has to be carried true up a flight of stairs and round a winder. Pile direction has to run the same way through every piece, or a single colour reads as two.
None of it is difficult for someone who does it week in and week out. All of it goes wrong in the hands of someone who does not.
