York Wilton

York Wilton is Ulster's plain Wilton, woven in Portadown in 80% wool with 20% nylon. Sixty colours, running from deep reds and golds through a very long set of neutrals to blues and greens. Many of them are heathers rather than flat solids, which matters in practice as well as in looks — and is the first thing to get straight.

What it’s like to live with

Heather or flat solid

A heather yarn is spun from several shades blended together before weaving, so the colour has depth rather than one flat tone. It shows marks, tracking and shading less readily than a flat solid — on a landing or a busy hall a real advantage, not a matter of taste. For a mid-grey or beige in a family house, take the heather.

Three widths, and where a seam falls

Three widths only — 5m, 4m and 3m, with no runner width — so stair carpet is cut from a full width. Wastage comes down to room shape and where the seams fall. A join wants to run away from the window and from the line you see first through the door, because on a plain the eye follows the light rather than a motif.

Pile direction and the nosings

All pile lies one way, and two pieces laid pile-to-pile read as two shades in daylight though colour and batch are identical. So every piece runs the same way, on stairs as much as across a room. That, and a firm quality branded UK-made underlay rather than a generic foam, keeps a plain from looking tired at the nosings. Blot spills.
